There are many differences between a high quality braided rug from Colonial Braided Rug Company and rugs from other companies, including the yarn used, the “core” inside the braid, the sewing thread, and the craftsman making the rugs.

 The Yarn

We use a top quality, residential carpet yarn throughout our rugs. These rugs are composed of 100% carpet yarn. Carpet yarn has many advantages over other fibers. While it is as durable as wool, it is colorfast, and low maintenance. The yarn we use is partially composed of recycled plastics, so the environment benefits as well. Our rugs are completely machine washable, and the larger ones can be cleaned as would carpet: By vacuuming, spot cleaning, steam cleaning, or using a brush, dish detergent, and water.

The Core

All braids must have a core, which is an inner material that gives the braid shape and consistency. While unseen by the end user, the type of core used is essential to the durability and quality of the rug. The two types of rug braids are true flat braid and round braid. Flat braids are far superior in looks and in maintaining their shape and form and are made on rug braiders. (Figure A)

Round braids use only 1 core and are made with rope braiders. Because of their low quality, round braids are most common in bargain and discount stores. The braid in the photo below (Figure B) is a round braid. Colonial Braided rug Company makes only true flat braided rugs.

Colonial Braided Rug Company always used the exact same yarn on the inside as on the outside. This process guarantees machine wash ability and many years of durability. Solid yarn construction also makes the rugs heavier per square foot.

The Sewing Thread

We use a 10 millimeter monofilament sewing thread that is unsurpassed in it’s strength and durability. Other companies use a cotton thread, which breaks or dissolves easily or a lower thickness monofilament thread. Because of the quality of our thread, we offer a lifetime warranty on the sewing stitches in our rugs.

The Crafts People

Every one of Colonial Braided Rug Company’s rugs are meticulously designed, sewn and inspected by highly skilled artisans in the western piedmont of North Carolina. Most other rug manufacturers pay their employees production or piecework for each item make. Our craftsman have always been paid hourly or salary wages to make sure that their emphasis has been on quality, not quantity. The average length of service time for our artisans is 10 years with the company.

The focus on quality and the pride that each artisan shows in her work is apparent in the many extra touches that go into our rugs. While most other companies sew over their splices and endings one time, our artisans always do three stitches. Each rug is inspected on both sides by the artisan doing the sewing, and then again by the inspector at the packaging station.
